Creating more awareness among differently abled

Role of the educated in taking information on rehabilitation and welfare programmes of the government to the differently abled persons, who are mostly illiterates, is imperative, said District Differently Abled Rehabilitation Officer K. M. Kanagaraj.

Inaugurating a capacity building programme for the differently abled persons at the Gandhigram Rural Institute here on Sunday, he said many differently abled persons in rural areas did not know much about government schemes. People, who are literates should enlighten them and assist them in getting government aid.

Differently abled persons should also provide necessary information and the type of problems they face to government officials to enable them to process their applications quickly, he advised.

At present 4,500 mentally retarded persons had been receiving pension in the district. The district administration has sent a proposal to the government to extend the benefits to 500 more beneficiaries.

Under the Green House scheme, two houses have been allotted to differently abled persons in each block and they have been given jobs under national rural employment guarantee scheme.

Equipment and vehicles for mobility would be provided to participants, said programme coordinator M. P. Boraian. Methods to prepare phenol, liquid blue, vessel cleaning powder, washing powder and making pickles and mushroom soup were taught to the participants.
