His dream to play for the country has come true. Vikram awardee physically challenged swimmer from Gwalior, Satendra Singh, who had been running from pillar to post for many months to arrange money for attending the qualification round of Rio Paralympics, finally got the financial support.
TOI had carried a story about Satendra last month, mentioning that state sports department refused to help him. Later, a city-based private gym presented a cheque of Rs 50,000 to him on Thursday. After his story appeared in TOI, director of Juna Gym, Hemant Katare, contacted Satendra. "He is a talented swimmer. Owing to this reason, I came forward to help him. I wish him best of luck," said Katare.
Satendra suffers from orthopaedic disability and can't move without wheelchair. In 2014, Satendra was presented Vikram award by Madhya Pradesh government for bringing laurels to the state through his determined performances at the national level. When Satendra contacted sport department he was told that there was no policy for providing financial support to the physically challenged athletes for such events. Sports Authority of India (SAI) has included his name to contest in the Rio qualification round. "SAI can't help me financially as I am not associated with any SAI training centre (STC)," said Singh.
