Labour ministry encourages companies to hire more disabled people : THAILAND

The Labour Ministry is pushing ahead with plans to toughen rule on employing persons with disabilities to a ratio of 1:100.

Labour permanent secretary Somkiat Chayasriwong said during a job fair for the disabled on Wednesday that the government is encouraging companies to offer more disabled people vocational opportunities in a bid to lessen burden on families. The move will in turn lead to sustainable improvements in the quality of life for disabled people.

He elaborated that the ministry will impose stricter checks to see whether companies have followed the regulation which is in accordance with the Persons with Disabilities' Quality of Life Promotion Act 2007 as disabled workers may face difficulties in being treated fairly or lack a formal employment contract. In total, 27,000 disabled people have been employed nationwide which is short of 47,000 required by the law.

The fair which is held at the CentralWorld Shopping Center from September 4-5 will also advertise over 180 vacancies within companies from across the country.
