Pensioners oppose change in payment norms : BehramPur

The elderly and physically challenged beneficiaries of Madhu Babu Pension Yojana have raised objection to recently announced decision of the panchayats in Ganjam district on payment of pension.

Two days back, the panchayats issued a notice stating that the old age and physically challenged pension beneficiaries will have to collect the money from panchayat office. Till now, panchayat officials used to pay them the pension amount at their doorsteps.

The beneficiaries, particularly those staying away from the panchayat office, have expressed their resentment over the decision.

The case in point is Bhabanipur village which is located seven km from Satakutuni panchayat office. The beneficiaries pointed out that it would be an arduous task for them to travel
every month to the panchayat office to collect the meagre pension amount of `300.

“The State Government continues to pay monthly pension of `300 to widows, physically challenged and the aged at a time when a cup of tea costs more than `3 at roadside kiosks. And making things worse, we will now have to travel to the panchayat office to collect the amount which is very difficult for most of us,” said a beneficiary, requesting anonymity as he feared that if his identity is revealed, the authorities may stop the meagre amount also.

There are around 200 pensioners in the village under the scheme. The beneficiaries, who are unhappy with the arrangement, have now appealed to the Ganjam Collector to look into the issue and initiate necessary measures.
