BanglaDesh Bank asks banks to bolster CSR activities on education

The central bank recently asked the banks to help country's poor and physically challenged students through scholarship, donation and financial assistance under corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities on priority basis.

The Bangladesh Bank took the move to integrate the poor and physically challenged students with the mainstream of the society so that they can contribute in the economic activities of the country.

It will also help end the disparity among the social segments. The Bangladesh Bank issued a letter to the chief executive officers (CEOs) of the scheduled banks to implement the directive. In May, 2012, the BB issued a directive asking country's all commercial banks to spend at least 30 per cent of their total CSR fund for educational purpose.

"The latest directive will help create a skilled human resource pool in the country," a BB source said.

"Education is a cornerstone of economic development and we want to expand educational activities under the banks' CSR programmes," a BB high official said.

The central bank laid more stress on the CSR activities by the banks as part of their responsibilities to the society. The BB recently opened its 'green banking and CSR department' to monitor the banks' CSR works and make annual reports on such activities.
