Training programme on undertstanding autism begins today : ALLAHABAD

The Centre of Behavioural and Cognitive Sciences (CBCS), Allahabad University, would hold a five-day certificate training programme on 'Understanding young children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD): Assessment and early intervention' from Sunday. It would be conducted by Communication Developmental Eclectic Approach to Language Learning (Com DEALL) Trust, Bangalore and is being jointly organised by CBCS, department of psychology, AU and MLN Medical College, Allahabad.

This programme is a follow-up of 'Autism awareness programme on early detection and intervention' held on April 28 at MLN Medical College, Allahabad. The co-convener of the programme, Chhitij Srivastava, lecturer of psychiatry, MLN Medical College, Bhoomika R Kar, associate professor, CBCS and Komilla Thapa of department of psychology, AU, believe that such programmes are necessary to spread awareness and train professionals working in the field of autism. The programme gains importance in light of the fact that there has been a considerable rise in the prevalence of autism spectrum disorders (ASD) in India and in the West, resulting in a greater need for organised services for assessment and early intervention for children with ASD. "Autism is a developmental disorder, characterised by deficits in social interaction, communication and repetitive and restricted pattern of interests. It has been shown that intensive interventions that are started early can be helpful in altering the developmental trajectory for a significant proportion of children with ASD," said an expert.

The workshop will commence on November 10, with the inaugural session at 9.30am. MLN Medical College principal SP would be the chief guest.
