Differently-abled children of Akshaya Kshetram’s Centre for Persons with Special Needs at Durgasamudram were treated to saint-composer Tallapaka Annamacharya’s sankeertanas on Wednesday.
Donning
the attire of Annamacharya, C. Sriram Babu, a Kuchipudi artiste of
Annamayya Kuchipudi Nrutya Sikshanalayam, rendered keertanas in praise
of Lord Venkateswara, eliciting spontaneous chorus from the children.
Not
witness to such performances earlier, the children thoroughly enjoyed
the programme organised at the temple on the premises of Akshaya
Kshetram.
Speaking to The Hindu, Mr. Babu said organising such events for children with special needs would provide entertainment as well as build religiosity in their minds.
“In this technological era, many have forgotten the glorious history of our ancestors. To revive the forgotten past, we have been organising programmes whenever we get an opportunity. Moreover, performing at Akshaya Kshetram will help the children get a break from their routine,” he added.
Pointing to the colourful costume and makeshift ‘tambura’, Mr. Babu said songs and dance would confer joy and offer a soothing effect.
“This is the least we can do to the children,” he said.
Besides being an accomplished dancer, Mr. Babu also works as a member of the administrative staff at Sri Venkateswara University’s Department of Management.
Mr. Babu, along with his troupe of 30 like-minded persons, has taken up the responsibility of propagating the teachings and ‘keertanas’ of Annamacharya through their performances.
