VISITING Nepal left a lasting impression on Sam Kolbee.

The PCYC school-age care services manager visited the country on a trekking holiday last year.

During her trip, the 29-year-old discovered an orphanage for blind children.

Ms Kolbee said the children were educated in sub-standard conditions with no support from the government.

She said the education facilities survived solely on donations and the assistance of volunteers.

"When I returned to Australia, I decided I wanted to make a difference," she said.

"What we take for granted, Nepalese people struggle to obtain.

"Yet the Nepalese community remains positive, ambitious and grateful for what little they have."

With the help of her friend Jacinta Brown, Ms Kolbee has started a fundraising campaign to build a
five-room school building in the Nepalese village of Fulkharka.

"We've raised about $3000 with a target amount of $9000," she said.

"About $2500 has already been sent to Nepal to get the project started."

As part of the charitable fundraiser, a morning tea and fashion parade will be held tomorrow at The Gift Tree in North Ipswich.

Owner of the venue, Ruth O'Dowd, said she was keen to lend her shop to such a worthy cause.

"I'm passionate about fair trade and supporting developing countries so this appeal is something close to my heart," she said.

The fundraiser is also supported by Von's Gorgeous Gowns and Accessories, and Violet Brown Mobile Makeovers: Hair and Beauty.

The event will run from 10am to noon and costs $20. Tickets are available at the door.

The day will also feature raffles, stalls selling pre-loved items and a sausage sizzle. For details, phone Ruth on 0437 110 789.
