Ratan Modi raised his voice by lodging a complaint with the police against some local youths who were bursting illegal fire crackers outside his residence.

Modi requested the youths to find some other place to burst firecrackers as they were all sleeping. The youths paid no heed to him and continued to burst loud firecrackers. They hurled verbal abuse at Modi, throwing sound crackers at his wheelchair.

The shameless youths then dragged Modi from his wheelchair and started beating him black and blue. Modi collapsed on the ground, and when he tried to get up the youths threw firecrackers at him again. They also broke the wheelchair before leaving.

The entire incident took place almost under the nose of the police administration, as the area is located a short distance from the Charu Market police station.

Later, Modi was taken to the nearest MR Bangur Hospital with serious injuries. He had lodged a complaint against two local youths with the police.

"The investigation is on. We are trying to trace out the accused," an officer of Kolkata Police said.

In another atrocious incident on the occasion of Kali puja and Diwali, a 42-year-old man was beaten to death by some local youths in front of his family as he protested against the use of prohibited sound crackers late on Saturday night.

The incident took place at the Ashoke Nagar locality in Kolkata's adjoining North 24 Parganas district, when some youths thrashed Pintu Biswas with bricks, iron rods, and bamboo sticks for over 15 minutes.

The attack happened in front of his family and other people of the locality as he went out of his residence to protest against illegal sound crackers.

Police have already arrested two people, while six others are still on the run.

According to sources, a local youth, Gopal Ballav, and his associates reportedly had an old rivalry with Biswas.

Biswas asked the youths not to burst sound crackers as an elderly woman, residing close to the pandal, had died just two days ago and her bereaved family could be disturbed.

The irate revellers did not listen to Biswas, and instead started beating him brutally. The victim succumbed to his injuries and died on the spot.
