PECobians' innovation to empower disabled : Chandigarh

Students of PEC mechanical branch have created a battery operated vehicle for physically impaired persons. The vehicle is controlled entirely with the right hand. The vehicle, which has can work for three and a half hours after being charged for one hour, bagged the second prize at the PEC Open House, an event where the best innovations of the year are showcased.

"A modified car for the physically handicapped" has been prepared in a way that throttle, steering, brake, money box and the cart are all controlled with just one hand. "This machine is very useful in cases of physical debility. Even those who do not have legs will find it easy to use the machine," said Rajan, a team member. The team of students comprising Rajan Kashyap, Alokik Bhasin, Amandeep Singh, Bakul Gupta, Shoaib Ahmed and Gursimrat Singh have designed the machine in such a way that it does not require any foot movement for mobility. Instead it empowers.

"We have designed it in a way that if the person has to sell something, it can be loaded easily and the drum carrying things can be rotated by the person for effective use," said Alokik. The students used steel pipes of one inch diameter by 2mm, painted black. If produced in bulk, the machine may cost around Rs 7,000 to Rs 8,000. "We have made a low lying machine so that the person can mount it easily and the seat is adjustable for comfort," said students.
