Chief Commissioner of Persons with Disabilities visits Mizoram

Chief Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities (PWD) Prasanna Kumar Pincha who is presently on tour to different parts of the country arrived here in the state capital to look into the implementation of Persons with Disability (PWD) Act, 1995.

He met with officials of Social Welfare Department and those of Persons with Disabilities Commissioner office of Mizoram at the State Guest House Conference Hall. Pincha said that he, after holding the office of PWD Chief Commissioner for two years, had toured different states to see to what the extent the legislation for the welfare of disabled persons has been implemented by the states.

“There is need to implement the provision in the PWD Act that 3% must be reserved for person with disabilities in any government jobs,” he said. He also said that he felt the need to come up with a new scheme for the welfare of the PWDs, especially for women.

The commissioner also spoke on the need to increase the pension for the PWDs and to make a provision for good education for them like others.

He also said that the commission was impressed with the initiative of Social Welfare and PWD Commissionerate for PWDs which had organized special assessment camps in several places of Mizoram. “Such assessment camps ease the problem of PWDs in remote rural places of the State as needful certificates are issued to the PWDs during the camp after verification by doctors. Otherwise, they need to obtain the certificate only from Aizawl. Mizoram is said to be the best performing among the Indian states in this regard,” he said.
