67-year-old Laxman Kumbhar won silver and a bronze medal at ‘11th National Masters’ Aquatic Championship’
He won the silver medal in the 50-meter butterfly and bronze in the 4 X 50 meter medley relay in the age group 65 to 69 years. More than 1,000 master swimmers from across the country participated in these competitions.
Mr. Kumbhar is a retired Railway Mail Service officer and has been participating in swimming competitions for the past 35 years. So far, he has bagged around 200 state and national medals. He continues his practice under the guidance of swimming coaches Umesh Kalghatgi and Sudhir Kusane.
Overcoming disabilities: Umesh Khade a young swimmer from the city won bronze medal at the ‘All India Open Sea Swimming Competition 2014’ held at Mumbai. He is deaf and dumb, but committed to swimming and scale high as a swimmer.
The competitions were organised by the Flag Officer Commanding in Chief, Western Naval Command, Mumbai on the occasion of Navy Day on November 26. Nearly 600 swimmers from across the country took part in this competition. Umesh won the bronze in the ‘Differently Able’ group. He is an employee of the Rotary Corporation Sports Academy, member of Swimmers Club and Aquarius Swim Club, Belagavi and being trained by Ajinkya Mendke, Akshay Sheregar and Nitish Kuduchkar.
