Physically challenged students in Delhi University have something to
cheer about. The varsity has come up with alternative courses for
persons with disability struggling with two foundation courses —
building mathematical ability and science and life — introduced under
the new four-year undergraduate programme.
In a notification, the varsity said that physically challenged students would be offered alternative courses, if they are unable to manage the foundation courses introduced recently.
“Students with disabilities may be offered alternative courses such as mathematical awareness and history of science,” said university officials.
Mathematical awareness course will focus only on the literature of mathematics, not the numbers.
“The students will study only the literature of mathematics and the contributions of renowned mathematicians in this field,” said Bipin Tiwari, officer on special duty at the Equal Opportunity Cell (EOC).
Similarly, in history of science, students will be taught only the literature of science.
“Those who want to take up building mathematical ability and science and life will be allowed to do so. In fact, the university will also provide them with parallel remedial classes,” Tiwari said.
Recently, the university had been dragged to court by an NGO for introducing the four-year programme, saying it was not “disabled-friendly.”
Sambhavana had highlighted the difficulties disabled students would face while pursuing courses — building mathematical ability and science and life.
The NGO had also sent its recommendations to the DU vice-chancellor in June after the Delhi High Court issued an interim order, asking the varsity to appoint a panel to look into the matter.
