MG College incident: Rights panel raps cops : Thiruvanthapuram

Criticising the practice of booking innocents when the real culprits cannot be found, the State Human Rights Commission has sought an explanation from the City Police on an incident where a physically challenged youth was taken into custody at midnight.

Arun Gopi, who is physically challenged, was sleeping at his home when policemen took him into custody in connection with the recent violence at MG College. They had clambered over the wall at midnight to pick him up. Both his parents are also physically challenged.

Commission Chairman Justice J B Koshy has asked the chief investigation officer of the Commission to investigate the matter and submit a report by August 27. The City Police Commissioner and the Circle Inspector and Sub-Inspector of Peroorkada have also been asked to submit their explanation by August 27.

Arun Gopi was taken into custody following the July-end incident at MG College, where a masked gang went on a rampage on the campus. The incident had also prompted the BJP and Sangh Parivar outfits to observe a hartal in the district the next day. The police had broken down the door to enter Arun Gopi’s home. His parents were assaulted.

The police also seized Arun’s SSLC book, medical documents and Rs 5,400, said the complaint.

Justice Koshy also pointed out that the police should book the real culprits in the incident. Even if the police register the arrest or not, an individual should be given an opportunity to meet his lawyer and should be produced before the court within 24 hours.
