Spanish wheelchair users face barriers to learning

Spanish universities are not wheelchair-friendly, according to claims by the country’s university foundation and a disabled persons association (Comité Español de Representantes de Personas con Discapacidad – CERMI).

Spanish wheelchair users face barriers to learning

They claim that 30% of universities, both private and public, are not equipped with facilities for wheelchair access. This is despite the fact that those universities claim on their websites to to have disabled access. The university curriculum was also found lacking when it comes to covering subjects related to disability. In faculties where you would expect some lessons to deal with disability issues (such as social sciences, engineering and health), only half of the courses that were monitored covered the subject. These claims are all the more worrying considering that the number of students with disabilities has almost doubled in Spain in the past five years, from 10,000 in 2008 to 18,300.
