Drive to identify buildings which are not disabled friendly : Chennai

More than 20 Exnora members gathered opposite the Commissionerate for the Welfare of the Differently Abled at KK Nagar on Sunday morning to check if it was disabled friendly.

On the occasion, a programme titled 'Accessibility Compliance Check' was launched by the Differently Abled Rights Exnora (DARE) along with the Tamil Nadu Udavikkaram Association for the Welfare of the Differently Abled to identify buildings which don't have facilities for the disabled people.

"We chose the commissionerate for the launch because close to 300 people visit the building every day for ID cards, counselling or medical treatment, but there is no proper footpath for the disabled," said DARE president TAP Varadakutti.

He said that the journey from the bus stop to the commissionerate on the opposite side had always been dangerous for the disabled people owing to the encroachment on the footpaths, heavy traffic and lack of signals.

The organisations will visit more offices and commercial buildings, including malls and hospitals, to 'check if they're disabled people-friendly, said Varadakutti.

They will document their findings along with photographs and present them to the state government.
