Physically challenged woman attempts to take poison before collector

Tension prevailed for a while when a 25-year-old physically challenged woman allegedly attempted to consume poison during the grievance day meeting at collectorate here today.
According to official sources, Malathi of Thiruvanaikovil took to this step protesting alleged police inaction over her police complaint against five persons of the same locality for allegedly attempting to sexually attack her on January 11. She also claimed the culprits severely beat her nephews and police did not take any action so far.
Despite several petitions to the district collector at weekly grievance days, there was no action, she claimed. Today also she came to the collectorate and was waiting in the queue for her turn to meet District Collector Jayashree Muralidharan when all of sudden she attempted to swallow rat poison.
On seeing this, the police on bandobust duty, prevented her attempt and took her to the Collector who assured her of suitable legal action against the culprits . The Collector also distributed a tricycle to her based on a plea made by her in a separate petition and sent her to her house under police escort, the sources added.
