25 differently abled among 2100 tie the nuptial knot

Raipur : More than 25 differently abled couples entered into wedlock at a marriage ceremony organized by the Social Welfare department under its Nishaktjan Vivah Protsahan Yojna at the Government Science College ground on January 31. The department also presented `21,000 cheque to each of the couples.


During the mass marriage ceremony organised under the Mukhyamantri Kanyadaan Yojana, along with 21,00 couples, 28-year-old destitute Itwari and 20-year-old Sona, both residents of Kutami village in Bilaspur district, also tied the nuptial knot.

Mohan, the brother of Itwari, who is visually handicapped from birth, said financial constraints and physical inability had made the marriage of Itwari impossible. Itwari said, with the amount of `21000 given by the Social Welfare department, they could start a happy married life.

According to departmental officers, for the social rehabilitation of the destitute and handicapped persons, the State government had started ‘Nishaktjan Vivah Protsahan Yojna’ in 2005. Under this scheme, 2,300 couples have entered into wedlock so far, they added.

They said destitute women of 18 to 45 years and destitute men of 21 to 45 years could benefit from the scheme.
