Access Education : US and Aus Agencies Coming Together


The Catholic Relief Services (CRS) has signed a memorandum of understanding on a USD 319,200 support to a project on the promotion of people with disabilities rights to education (2013-2015) with the Ministry of Education and Sports.

The MOU on the grant assistance was signed in Vientiane on Jan 29 between Director of Catholic Relief Services, Ms. Elizabeth Thomas, Director of the Department of Preschool and Primary Education, Mr. Mithong Souvanvisay, in the witness of representatives of the Australian Embassy in Laos and relevant officials of both sides.

According to the document, the project will be implemented between Jan 1, 2013 and Jan 1, 2015 in Saybouathong district, Khammouane province, with a support of USD 297,600 from the Office of Development Effectiveness of the AusAid and a contribution of USD 21,600 from the Catholic Relief Services.
The project is designed to translate into reality the government policy on promoting the access to education of people with disabilities through mixing them with normal students in school-based activities through training and capacity building of relevant officials, teachers and village education committees.

The project is expected to benefit over 220 people with disabled people, 400 village education committee members, dozens of relevant officials at central, provincial and district levels, and almost 200 teachers in 40 villages.
