Differently abled persons demand voting aids : IMPHAL

Demanding that the election authorities provide or insert requisite material assistance such as ramp, Braille symbols and station sign language interpreters at polling stations to enable the differently abled people exercise their franchise right, Handicapped Development (HD) Foundation secretary general Sapam Jasobanta Singh said differently abled people have decided not to cast vote in the upcoming Parliamentary elections if such facilities are not put in place.

Speaking to newspersons at Manipur Press Club today, Jasobanta said differently abled people too intent to exercise their democratic right but without ramp for the physically challenged persons, Braille symbols and auditory signal system for the visually impaired and sign board sign language interpreter for the hearing impaired participation in elections would be impossible.

Stating that in the past elections absence of privacy and requisite aids resulted in either the differently abled persons abstaining from voting or their votes cast by someone else, he said for the upcoming lok Sabha election all possible measures should be taken so that voting right of the differently abled persons are not misused by others.

Informing that the CEO has already been intimated to provide basic requirements for the differently abled persons to exercise their voting right, Jasobanta said as per 2011 census report there are over 37,000 differently abled persons who are eligible to cast vote.

He further maintained that whether or not election authorities respond positively to the Foundation's sincere appeal would be assessed with media persons on the eve of the 16th Lok Sabha elections in polling stations of both Outer and inner Manipur PCs.
