City's
institute for visually impaired students, Regional Institute for Blind,
Sector 26, is likely to get affiliation from the Central Board of
Secondary Education (CBSE) soon. The institute, which had applied for
the affiliation last year, intends to open up the door for better
opportunities for its students with the move.
"We want to switch over to CBSE since it has a universal appeal. As many as 99% of schools in the city are affiliated to CBSE. Our blind students will be benefitted by the move and get better opportunities," said BS Jaira, principal of the institute. Presently, exams for classes X and XII of the school are conducted under the Punjab State Education Board.
Jaira said fees for the affiliation have been deposited with the CBSE in two installments of Rs 16,000 and 10,000. "We had applied for the affiliation online last year. We have submitted the list of staff members and other necessary details as well," he added.
A team of officials from the board is expected to visit the school for inspection in the near future. "If all goes well, we will get the affiliation within the next couple of months," the principal said.
The institute, which was created in 1972, has been affiliated to Punjab State Education Board since 1990. Presently, 157 students are studying in the institute that aims to enable them to merge with the mainstream after completing school education.
