Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has said the
government is working to assimilate physically challenged people into
the social mainstream.

She said while speaking at an event marking the World Autism Awareness Day on
Wednesday that her government was striving to create conditions for the
rehabilitation of autistic persons and those differently abled.
The state was responsible for their well-being, she said.
She urged private bodies to join efforts to brighten the lives and future of those afflicted with autism.
“I believe our concerted effort will help bring autistic children into the mainstream of life,” she said.
Nasima
Begum, acting secretary to the ministry of social welfare, in her
welcome address shared her experience as the mother of an autistic
child.
The Prime Minister said the government had enacted the Neuro Development Disabled Protection Trust Act 2013.
Hasina said the guardians of autistic children had no reason to feel embarrassed or stigmatized.
“They are part of the society. We should be compassionate towards them,” Hasina said.
She announced the upgrading of the National Foundation for Development of Disabled Persons to the level of a directorate.
She also said sports events would be held especially for challenged people.
Hasina said her daughter, Saima Hossain Putul, was currently working on autism and neuro development at the international level.
It
was largely due to her (Putul) efforts, she said, that the UN and WHO
had adopted two separate resolutions on autism, urging countries to work
for children suffering from the neurological disorder.
The Prime Minister spoke of introducing 73 one-stop service centres in the country’s 64 districts.
The construction of a multipurpose complex for the challenged had already begun, she said.
It will accommodate 275 people and take care of their education and treatment.
Later, Hasina attended cultural programme presented by autistic children.
