‘Dist Panchayat’s ‘Sneha Vahanam’ Overwhelms Beneficiaries : KAKKANAD

Most eyes were wet, some immersed in thoughts, some people thanked the authorities, some heaved a sigh of relief and a few others tried to take a ride on the new vehicle.

The people were overwhelmed when the district panchayat distributed three-wheeled motorcycles to nearly 50 physically challenged people as part of their project, ‘Sneha Vahanam’. The programme was implemented in association with the Social Justice Department.

“I have been dreaming of owning a three-wheeler but my physical condition restricted me from garnering enough money. I thank the district panchayat for making my dream come true,” said a person after receiving the motorcycle.

Joy P from Manjakkad also shared the same sentiments. “The consideration given by the panchayat is really great especially for people like me who cannot afford it,” Joy said.

Minister for Transport Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan inaugurated the programme by giving the key of a vehicle to Chothy K N from Kizhakkambalam, the other day. The project aims at providing three-wheeled motorcycles to 362 physically challenged persons coming under the district panchayat. Around `2.2 crore has been set aside for it.   District panchayat president Eldhose Kunnappilly presided over the function. Last year, the district panchayat distributed as many as 400 such motorcycles to the physically challenged. “Our aim is to provide three-wheelers to all the physically-challenged in the district and we hope it will become a reality soon,” said Eldhose.

District Collector M G Rajamanikam, Social Welfare officer K K Vinayan, Thrikkakara municipality chairman Shaji Vazhakkala, district panchayat vice-president Bindu George, Social Welfare Standing Committee chairman Valsa Kochu Kunju, Development Standing Committee chairman Babu Joseph were present.
