With India recording the largest population of illiterate adults —
287 million people who contribute to 37 per cent of the total global
illiterates — according to a United Nations report, the prime focus
should be on education, said Governor K Rosaiah.
Presiding over
the seventh scholarship function conducted by the Educational and Social
Research Organisation (ESRO) recently, he distributed the education
grants to economically-underprivileged children and aid to support the
physically-challenged.
With all praise to organisations like ESRO that promote education among the differently-abled, he said, “The 20th century gave birth to a number of voluntary and social service organisations. In the 21st century, we see private sector playing a pivotal role and joining hands with the government to support social causes and help people at the time of natural calamities.” Also present at the occasion were chairman, United India Insurance Milind Kharat, director CVRDE P Sivakumar, chairman of Raasi group of companies C Narasimhan. Recognising the ESRO for its contribution towards the poor, Sivakumar added that the education was essential to implement all the schemes initiated by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
