Delhi University offers 50 per cent discount for online applicants :

Delhi University wants more students to apply online this year instead of coming to the campus to buy printed forms. To make the online process better, DU is not only giving a 50 per cent discount to general category students but is also introducing the online application process for SC/ST and physically challenged candidates this year.

The common pre-admission form will be available on DU's website as well as over the counter at 18 centres in the city. The sale and submission of the common OMR form starts on Wednesday.

Incentive: Applying to DU online will cost Rs 50, while the printed forms will cost students Rs 100

For the first time, the admission process of SC/ST candidates as well as physically challenged has been decentralised.

"The SC/ST candidates and the physically challenged will have to apply on the common OMR form. They can apply free of cost online. The printed form will cost them Rs 50 with a prospectus," said Professor J.M. Khurana, dean of Students' Welfare.

He added, "For general category and OBC students, the printed forms and a prospectus will cost Rs 100. They will have to pay Rs 50 if they register online."
DU had introduced the online process of application last year, but there were some glitches especially in the payment gateway.

"Applicants can pay online using credit or debit cards. We wouldn't like them to come to the counters in this heat. They can apply from their home or any cyber café. Earlier many students applying in SC/ST category had to come to DU from as far as the northeastern states. Online process will make it easier for them," Khurana said.

Wish to apply from the comfort of your home and also avail a 50 percent discount? That's what Delhi University authorities are offering as they open admissions under the four-year undergraduate programme giving 50% discount to general category and Other Backward Classes aspirants registering online. It gets even better for Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes and Persons With Disability as for them there is no registration fee if they apply online.

DU's undergraduate admissions for 2013-14 get underway on Wednesday. General category and OBC aspirants who are planning to apply offline by completing optical mark recognition forms available across 18 colleges will have to pay Rs 100 but in case they apply online they may pay only Rs 50. Online payment will be done through debit and credit cards.

SC/ ST/ PWD candidates may apply via OMR forms by paying Rs 50 or free of cost online. "The aim is to promote the environment-friendly paperless process. This will also ensure that aspirants from outside Delhi need not travel just to apply. Even students from Delhi can apply from the comfort of their homes instead of stepping out in this heat. Once the cutoffs are declared, the students can directly approach the colleges where they meet the criteria," dean of students' welfare J M Khurana said.

This is the first time the university is offering online registration to SC/ST and PWD. There will be a separate cutoff list for these categories. There will be two sets of OMR forms—one for general and OBC candidates and the other for SC/ ST/ PWD candidates. The general/OBC form will cost Rs 100; the SC/ ST/ PWD form will cost Rs 50. There are 34 listed courses and a candidate can apply in all these courses. This year, though, there is no option of selecting individual colleges. If a student applies for a certain course, he/ she is eligible for admission in all colleges offering that course in case he/ she meets the cutoff criterion.

The OMR form also has new optional sections like family income and mobile phone numbers. "All aspirants applying online will be intimated via SMS. We will also try to offer this service to those who applied offline as well. That's why we are asking for mobile numbers," Khurana said.
