Unique park for disabled coming up at Malakpet

The New Indian Express , 10th June 2013

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation is setting up a unique park for differently-abled persons at Nalgonda Crossroads in Malakpet area of the city.

This was revealed by city mayor M Majid Hussain at the inauguration of a camp organised for donation of artificial limbs and calipers to physically-challenged persons in association with Bhagawan Mahavir Vikalang Sahayata Samithi at Rajasthani Hindi Vidyalaya in  Old City on Sunday.

The first phase of the park is complete and work on the second phase is in progress, he said.

The mayor claimed that GHMC was the only municipal corporation in the country taking keen interest in the welfare of disabled people by opening a separate wing, Vikasam, for them and providing 10 percent reservation for them in most of the schemes.

Hussain hailed Bhagawan Mahavir Vikalang Sahayata Samithi for conducting the camp in the old city. Minister for child and disabled welfare Sunitha Lakshma Reddy, who inaugurated the camp, said the government was making efforts to extend all support to physically-challenged persons by initiating various schemes for them.

The government has enhanced the incentive from Rs 10,000 to Rs 50,000 to those who come forward to marry the disabled, she said and lauded the service rendered by the  Vaish Federation of Andhra Pradesh and Bhagawan Mahavir Vikalang Sahayata Samithi to the disabled.

Chief patron of Bhagawan Mahavir Vikalang Sahayata Samithi PC Parekh said theirs was the only organisation in the country which was taking more care of physically challenged people and providing them with artificial limbs, calipers, etc free of cost.

The artificial foot prepared and distributed by them was the best and  cheapest in the world, he claimed. An artificial leg manufactured with latest technology in western countries would cost around Rs 3 lakh whereas Mahavir was making one at a cost of just Rs 3,000 and distributing to the needy free of cost on humanitarian grounds, Parekh said.

The exclusive international standard park for the physically-challenged with a barrier-free environment at Nalgonda crossroads, Malakpet is all set to come up in another six months. The GHMC, which is spending close to Rs. 34.20 lakh for the park, has already finished the works related to the first phase of the project and the second phase is on in full swing, said Mayor Mohd. Majid Khan.

“The barrier-free park is one among several initiatives of GHMC taken up for the cause of the physically-challenged. Ours is the only municipality that has a separate cell ‘Vikasam’ for physically-challenged. We have also provided 10 per cent reservation for the disabled to operate Sulabh complexes,” he said at a special artificial limbs donation camp held in Old City on Sunday to mark Mahesh Navami.

The camp was organised by the State unit of All India Vaish Federation (AIVF) in collaboration with Bhagwan Mahaveer Vikalang Sahayatha Samiti (BMVSS) and GHMC. Nearly 300 physically-challenged persons visited the camp and made use of the facilities that included taking measurements followed by distribution of the custom-made artificial limbs (Jaipur foot).

“We wanted to make sure that the physically-challenged are satisfied with their Jaipur foot and hence we brought experts,” said patron, BMVSS, P. C. Parakh.

The city chapter of BMVSS, set up in 1983 at King Kothi district hospital, has already supplied 40,000 artificial limbs.

“The cost of imported limbs is between Rs. 1 lakh and Rs. 3 lakh while the cost of Jaipur foot is just Rs. 3,000. The Jaipur foot has empowered the physically challenged,” Mr. Parakh said.

Minister, Child and Disabled Welfare, Sunitha Lakshma Reddy, who inaugurated the camp, congratulated AIVF, BMVSS and GHMC for holding the camp in Old City. National president, AIVF, Gireesh Kumar Sanghi, top office-bearers of AIVF and members of Vaish community were present.
