Differently-abled woman allegedly raped in Kolkata

A 24-year-old, differently-abled woman was allegedly raped this morning in the New Town suburb of Kolkata. This is the third incident of rape reported in the state in the last fortnight.

The woman was allegedly alone at home at the time of the incident. A man, in his early 30s and a neighbour of the victim, is absconding. A case of rape has been registered.

West Bengal has witnessed a string of rapes in the last few days that have triggered shock and anger. A group of 50 women activists today protested outside the home of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee; 13 of them were arrested. They were not taken to court but released on bail from the central lock up at the police headquarters.

The demonstrators wanted a meeting with Ms Banerjee to discuss the recent rape cases.

A college student was gang-raped and killed on Friday just 25 kilometres from Kolkata; a young school girl was raped and killed 150 kilometres away on Monday.

Earlier this month, an Irish tourist was raped in Kolkata, allegedly by a local businessman who she met at a nightclub. He has been arrested.

The protesters also wanted to meet the chief minister to seek her response to a report by the National Bureau of Crime Records (NCRB) which says West Bengal tops the number of crimes against women in the country.

The NCRB says Bengal recorded the highest number of crimes against women for the second year in a row in 2012. The state government, however, contested the data, claiming its disclaimers were not published.

According to NCRB, Bengal recorded 30,942 cases of crime against women in 2012. But state Director General of Police Naparajit Mukherjee said rape cases had come down "considerably" in 2012.

Neighbour accused of raping 24-yr-old differently-abled girl

The crime against women continues unabated in the country. In Bidhannagar, the IT hub of Kolkata, a 24-year-old differently-abled girl was raped allegedly by her neighbour on Thursday.

The girl's mother has filed an FIR at the New Town Police Station. However, no arrests have been made yet. The suspect is absconding, the police say.

The incident comes just hours after hundreds of women protesters were detained outside Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's residence. The women had been protesting against the recent rape and murder of a woman in Barasat.

Kolkata: Neighbour accused of raping 24-yr-old differently-abled girl

The shameful incident comes just hours after hundreds of women anti-rape protesters were detained outside CM Mamata Banerjee\'s residence.

The ruling Trinamool Congress called it a "CPM conspiracy to destabilise the government". "The protests outside the CM's residence is a conspiracy by CPI-Marxist women. This is a conspiracy by the CPI-M, the Congress and the Maoists to destabilise the government," said Mukul Roy. He further announced that the TMC will take a counter rally to "clear the misperception" being created by the opposition about the government.

The protesters, however, slammed the government for cracking down on a peaceful strike and called it an attack on the freedom of expression.

On Wednesday, new data with the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) had revealed that West Bengal has the highest incidence of crimes against women. The data showed that 30,942 incidents of crimes against women were reported in the state in 2012 - the highest in the country.

The data ranked Kolkata as the third most unsafe city in the country, preceded by Delhi and Bangalore.

The West Bengal government, however, was quick to contest the report saying that the numbers were misleading, and did not take into account the fact that the rate of crimes had declined.
