UT govt colleges demand new hostels, lifts and courses - Chandigarh

More number of hostels on the college campus, ramps and lifts for physically challenged students on the campus, introduction of new courses for the students and gymnasium halls are some of the common proposals given by the city’s government colleges to the Chandigarh higher education department for the forthcoming budget.
The principals of five government colleges raised their respective concerns over the requirements in the colleges, at a recent meeting conducted by director, higher education department, Rubinderjit Singh Brar. The colleges will submit their final feedback for the budget 2016-17 by next week, so that the department can compile the recommendations on behalf of the city and send it to the Union ministry of human resource and development for the approval.
Principal of the Post Graduate Government College for Girls ( PGGCG), Sector 11, Anita Kaushal said, “We already have a provision of ramps and another hostel is already under construction to adjust more number of students. We mooted the proposal of having a lift on the campus, because the disabled students in our college face lot of problems.”
Echoing the same opinion, Gurjeet Kaur, principal of PGGC, Sector 46 said, “We have given three proposals at the meeting, including provision of two hostels separately for boys and girls, comprising of 100 rooms each, ramps for the disabled students on the campus and also a gymnasium hall.”
“We had earlier proposed for the facility of lift on the campus for the convenience of students but the architecture department of the Chandigarh administration refused to give us the permission citing area is not up to the standards. Thus, we have given a proposal for the ramps on the campus.”
Similarly, principal of PGGC, Sector 11, Professor JK Sehgal, also highlighted the need of ramps on the campus for the disabled students. He also said, “The construction of our biotechnology department is completed and we are waiting for the possession. Another problem which needs to be considered is of the salaries for the contractual employees which we are paying out of other funds.”
At the meeting, college principals also put forth their demands of introducing new courses in the respective colleges. For the new academic session (2016-17), the PGGCG-11 has applied for two courses - an honours course in Physics and Chemistry and another one is masters course in fine arts.
