Assistant teachers to help students with special needs in class : DUBAI

UAE Ministry of Education hired 12 assistant teachers as a step towards integrating students with special needs in schools.

The Ministry of Education has hired 12 assistant teachers in several educational districts as a step towards integrating students with special needs in schools.

The integration programme targets young unemployed Emirati women and provides them with special need education courses at the British University of Dubai in order to qualify them to become assistant teachers.

Minister of Education Humaid Mohammad Al Qutami said that having assistant teachers in regular classes and special needs classes is vital because it will ensure that they receive the same educational opportunities as their peers.

The teachers will be tasked with providing individual support to special needs students by following and documenting their progress, assisting them in their class projects, preparing required equipment such as hearing and visual aids and assisting during their lunch breaks.

The minister added that more teachers will be hired as soon as they complete their training.
The ministry aims to eventually have enough assistant teachers to provide individual attention for each special needs student in class.
The Emirates Association for Down’s syndrome and Emirates Foundation for Youth Development are also involved in the training that takes place at the university.
