Abling people the 'Agape'way : CHENNAI

Over 180 disabled people celebrated the annual get together at the Agape Rehabilitation Centre on Sunday. Students, from all across the State, who had graduated earlier from the Centre, were also present on the occasion.

“It is always good to come back to agape Christmas get-together,” said Devipriya, an alumnus of Agape Centre, who now runs a tuition centre and also takes care of Wipro’s vendor office. She was awarded by the centre for being a role model for disabled persons. Alumni from Tirunelveli, Coimbatore and Tiruchendur were also present. Avitha Daniel, founder and co-ordinator of the centre, said, “In school and college they may not get the opportunity to perform on stage, but here they are the heroes.”  Many of them get to make their first visit to beaches and restaurants from Agape, she said. The centre has been providing vocational training especially in computer applications to disabled students. It also gives mobility training to boost their confidence.
Several students who used to be socially-reserved are now successful in well placed jobs, she said. The centre also distributed blankets to all those who attended the programme.
