The cash-strapped Indore Municipal Corporation seems to be going to any
length to fill its coffers. First, it started seizing properties of tax
defaulters in the city. Now, it has asked social justice department to
pay it Rs 29.5 lakh.
The civic body says it has paid this amount to Atal Indore City Transport Service Limited (AICTSL) to facilitate concessional travel of disabled and elderly in city buses. “We have written to social justice department for reimbursement of the amount under its Nirashrit Nidhi,” said IMC deputy commissioner Abhay Rajangawkar.
IMC had recently paid about Rs 29.5 lakh to AICTSL, which provides 50 per cent concession in fare to disabled and elderly persons travelling in city/I-buses.
As per IMC’s records, as many as 34614 persons availed concession while travelling in AICTSL buses from Nov 2010 to July 2012.
Though social justice department has not responded to IMC letter asking for reimbursement, but the civic body expects a positive reply in this regard. “The department has sufficient funds available with it under the scheme meant for benefit of disabled and elderly persons,” said Rajangawkar.
“In case the department refuses to reimburse the amount, we will continue to offer 50 per cent concession in the fare to disabled and elderly persons travelling in AICTSL buses,” he added.
