Social Welfare Minister B Valarmathi on Tuesday held detailed
discussions with representatives of differently-abled and directed the
authorities to redress their grievances.
During the talks held at
the Secretariat, the representatives of differently-abled pointed out
that the authorities have been following cumbersome rules to sanction
financial assistance to the differently-abled and demanded that the
assistance should be provided only through the Directorate of
Differently Abled Welfare, the Minister directed the officials to
rectify it immediately.
Further, the officials said steps have
been taken to implement the GO issued for simplification of rules for
issuing identity cards and that efforts were on to identify three per
cent job opportunities to be provided for the differently-abled in the
government departments.
The officials also agreed to re-admit
Eswari Bhandaranayaka, a differently-abled student, who was sent out of
the Madurai Kamaraj University’s Students Hostel recently. The
office-bearers of the Tamil Nadu Association for Rights of All Types of
Differently Abled and Caregivers thanked the Minister for taking action
on their demands.
