The State government has at last responded to repeated
pleas from the State Commissioner for Disabilities in Bangalore for
spacious premises that can be easily accessed by persons with
disabilities.
The new place
The
government has allotted about 4,000 sq. ft space on the second floor of
the Karnataka Slum Development Board office at No. 55, Risaldar Street
(Platform Road), which is close to the Bangalore city bus-stand and the
railway station. The new location is more accessible than the one that
was located in Cox Town, according to sources.
In the new office, there is ample space for a court room and meeting hall.
Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities K.V. Rajanna told
The Hindu
that there was a demand from persons with disabilities and the
organisations working for the welfare of such people for relocating the
office.
“We had been requesting the government for
allotting a suitable building. Finally, it allotted the building which
is close to the bus-stand and railway station. The building has an
elevator,” he added.
“The previous office was small
and I had to write to the government seeking space in multi-storey
building for holding meetings and press conferences. I had to plan my
meetings based on the availability of space. Here, we are independent
and can plan our schedules as per our convenience.”
Mr.
Rajanna said: “I hope the new office in the heart of the city will help
us serve people with disabilities better and address their grievances
with urgency.”
Non-governmental organisations working
for the welfare of people with disabilities and their rights are happy
that the office of the Commissioner for people with disabilities has
been shifted to a more convenient place.
