A profoundly deaf Boston Spa film student from St Jon has won a
prestigious film award at Deaffest, the UK’s leading film and arts
festival for the deaf.
His film, titled I Won’t do That Again, about an
amateur scientist who invents a control panel to clone people, won the
Young Deaf fest Award 2013.
William Horsefield, aged 18, is studying for an Extended Diploma in Creative Media Production TV and Film at York College, he also boards at St John’s School for the Deaf in Boston Spa where he learns Maths and English.
St John’s School support teachers also accompany William in classes at College, supporting him with his film making studies.
Film making started off as a hobby for William. Aged eight he started using Windows Movie Maker to create his own films.
At York College he has progressed from a Level 2 Media course and developed his skills to use Final Cut Pro, the industry standard software for creating films.
He particularly loves, and enjoys creating, special effects.
Scott Langford, Media tutor at York College said: “William is a fantastic film maker.
“His achievements are all the more remarkable because English is his second language.
“He lip reads and has a note taker in classes and he has a vivid imagination and enquiring mind.
“His talent allows him to translate those interesting ideas to the screen.”
William said: “I really enjoy making films and I felt proud seeing my work on the screen at Deaffest.
“I was delighted to be announced the winner and have the exposure and recognition.
“I have learnt a lot from my College tutors and the support I receive from St John’s School has really helped me.
“I want to go to university to study 3D Design and Special effects.”
William was presented with a special trophy at Deaffest by Rachel Shenton, of Hollyoaks fame.
In addition to his winning film, he also had a second film called ‘Shadow Stalker’ shown at the festival.
William has also made five films for Marie Curie Cancer Care and the charity has recently nominated him for the Lord Mayor of York Award.
His talents were also put to good use when he made a special video highlighting Deaf Awareness Week which was made available to all students at York College.
