The most sought after tourist beach in Ernakulam is all set to become
disabled-friendly beach too. The Fort Kochi Heritage Conservation
Society has cleared a project wherein certain changes will be introduced
in the walkway along the Fort Kochi beach facilitating wheel-chair
ridden persons to have a view of the beach.
Proposed by the Department of Tourism, the walkway for disabled persons is designed by renowned architect N Ramaswami, under whose supervision various renovation projects have been carried out in Fort Kochi and surrounded area earlier. The project was presented at the meeting of Fort Kochi Heritage Conservation Society chaired by secretary Tourism Suman Billa.
“As per the project, a circuit will be constructed from Kamalakkadavu Junction to the area near to the Dutch Cemetery through the beach. Ramps will be attached to the walkway for movement of wheelchairs and there will also be breakwater-like extended structures from the main walkway towards the sea, to take a disabled person to have a close view of the sea,” said MP Sivasdathan, president of Kumbalangi Model Tourism Society, who is also a member of Heritage Conservation Society.
“The project has been approved by thesociety, It is learnt that the Department of Tourism will implement the project with the assistance from the union Ministry of Tourism,” said DTPC authorities.
