Feminist Dalit Organisation and Nepal Disabled Women Association have been selected to participate in the US Department of State-sponsored Professional Fellows EMPOWER Programme, administered by Mobility International USA (MIUSA).

This two-way international exchange programme aims to expand the capacity of organisations in the US and abroad to promote inclusive communities and advance the rights of persons with disabilities around the world, FDO and NDWA said in a press release today.

FDO and NDWA have partnered with Disability Rights Education and Defence Fund in the United States to implement a long-term project on advocacy, leadership, and grassroots organising for the rights of women with disabilities, including Dalit women with disabilities.

In November 2013, Disability Rights Education and Defence Fund will send Susan Henderson, Executive Director, to Nepal for a preliminary exchange visit to gain an understanding of disability issues and inclusion in Nepal communities, as well as to lay the foundation for an effective ongoing international relationship, reads the rease.

One representative each from FDO and NDWA will then be hosted by MIUSA on October 13–19, and by Disability Rights Education and Defence Fund on October 19-29. At these forums, the two will work alongside American counterparts to gain first-hand experience on how issues in their field are addressed in the United States.

FDO and NDWA are two of the 40 international organisations and institutions from 20 different countries that have been competitively selected to participate in the Professional Fellows EMPOWER Programme.
