NGO nodal body to monitor schemes for people with disabilities : Vishakhapatnam

The Ability People, an NGO registered under the National Trust for the Welfare of Persons with Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Mental Retardation and Multiple Disabilities, under the Union ministry of social justice and empowerment, has been appointed as one of the statutory members of the local level committee (LLC) of the National Trust in Visakhapatnam district.

Announcing this here on Tuesday, DilipPatro, founder, The Ability People, told newspersons that the LLC would be the nodal body to receive and process applications for all schemes under the purview of the National Trust. The committee would also act as a nodal agency to appoint, monitor, evaluate and dismiss guardians for the people with disabilities, he added.


Elaborating on the various schemes in the offing for the people with disabilities, Patro said, "There are schemes such as Niramaya, a health insurance scheme for the welfare of those suffering from cerebral palsy, autism, mental retardation and multiple disabilities. Under the scheme, those below the poverty line will have to pay a premium of Rs 250 per annum, while Rs 500 per annum premium will have to be paid by those above the poverty line to avail medical insurance cover of up to Rs 1 lakh per annum."

Patro said that there were other schemes such as self employment scheme Uddyam Prabha for guardians and scholarship scheme Gyan Prabha for the people with disabilities as well as an annual award for guardians with prize money of Rs 1 lakh.
