A deaf, mute but alert mother acting with responsive cops thwarted a plan of abducting her 2-year-old son. The boy was rescued within 15 hours of the matter being reported to police station and showed how responsive policing can bring succour to citizens.
On Sunday, Sushma Karde, a resident of Jhansi who is also deaf and mute, was as usual begging on the footpath near railway station while her two-year-old son was playing some distance away. Suddenly, she saw a youth close to her son and offering the young boy a toffee. A few minutes later, she saw the youth carrying away her son.
"She tried to alert people nearby but being deaf and mute no one could understand her. She even tried to chase the abductor but failed as he disappeared in the crowd. Though extremely distressed, she stopped many people while trying to tell them about her son going missing. Some ignored her but some understood her action and brought her toGovernment Railway Police," said the investigating officer PSI K K Gedam of Sadar police.
GRP handed over the case to Sadar police as the incident had occurred in their area. Cops here too failed to understand what exactly she was trying to say. She could not even convey the boy's name to them. PSI Gedam then called in a teacher from deaf and mute school at Chhaoni. The teacher helped police record the woman's statement. The details along with the abductor's description were then flashed to all police stations and patrol parties.
Gedam along with PSI A M Bhos intensified patrolling in nearby areas. A few hours later with the help of their sources, cops zeroed in on Mohammad Shafiq Ansani, who works with a furniture shop, close to Itwari railway station. They recovered the young boy from him.
Though Ansani is in custody police still do not know the motive behind abduction. The accused is being questioned in this regard.
