Directives issued to make public places disabled-friendly : Kathmandu

The government has issued directives for making the public place physical infrastructures disabled-friendly.
The directives developed and issued by the Ministry of Women, Children and Social Welfare has defined government building, hospital, universities, organizations, religious sites, recreational places, public roads, pavement, parking areas, play ground, conference hall as the 'public places'.

Business complex opened for public, residential buildings, hotels and restaurants, and banks have also been categorised as 'public places'.

Physical infrastructures in public places should be compulsorily disabled-friendly. Physical infrastructures in public areas should be developed, bearing in mind the convenience of the disabled, the directives stated.

Besides, the public means of communications like television channels and radio stations should compulsorily have the representation of persons with physical disabilities.

The directives were unveiled amidst a programme organised by the Ministry here today. A meeting of the Council of Ministers on February 17 approved the directives.

The directives meant for addressing the voices of Nepal Federation of Disabled was prepared with the cooperation of the Federation.

Physical infrastructures in public places creating obstacles for the movement of disabled be replaced by the new ones, the directives states, adding that guiding blocks should be installed on the pavements for smooth movement of the disabled.

The directives have included the provision of managing an alternative to overhead bridges since they are not disabled-friendly.

Unveiling the directives, Ministry Secretary Dineshhari Adhikari said the directives would be supportive in making the public place physical infrastructures disabled-friendly.
