Separate Commissioner for differently-abled persons soon : Imphal

To look after the welfare of differently-abled persons in the State and also to take up developmental programes for them, a separate Commissioner for the differently-abled persons would be appointed very soon, Social Welfare Minister AK Mirabai has informed.

She was speaking on the occasion of releasing “Matamgi Seengnaba”, the first ever edition of a tri-annual journal for the differently-abled persons in the North East. The journal is being published by Handicapped Development Foundation, Manipur.  Minister Mirabai further stated that the journal which is the first of its kind in North East India would surely give a new ray of hope to the differently-abled persons by broadening the knowledge horizon and it would also help in changing the mindset of the general public towards differently-abled persons.

Chief Editor of “Matamgi Seengnaba”, Dr S Jashobanta, though a differently abled person himself, is a doctorate in History, while Kripa Pheiroijam is the Editor of the journal, said Minister Mirabai, adding that the efforts of the Handicapped Development Foundation, Manipur in bringing out the journal is quite praiseworthy.

The Minister pointed out that there are 12 NGOs run by differently-abled persons in the State, and it was during a meeting held exclusively for differently-abled persons in the office of the Chief Secretary recently that a decision on appointment of a separate Commissioner for differently-abled persons in the State was taken.

If a separate Commissioner is appointed, then the developmental programmes related to differently-abled persons would be able to take up smoothly in the State, she expressed confidence.

She went on to observe that differently-abled persons should be given due respect and their capabilities be recognized by the general public. The Social Welfare Department is also taking up certain programmes and policies to encourage differently-abled persons to mix and integrate with the general population.

The function was also attended by Letkhogin Haokip, Commissioner of Social Welfare Department.
