The differently-abled welfare
office on DMS campus in Chennai is ‘indifferently’ disabled. The office
lacks basic facilities like drinking water and clean toilet. More than
100 differently-abled persons visit the office every day.
During
a meet in the city early this week, when disabled activists raised the
issue of drinking water facility, they were told by the officials to
find a donor to supply water cans to the government office.
Vouching
for the indifferent treatment, 32-year-old M. Lalithambigai of
Taramani says that many times she bought packaged water from shops. “I
suffer with locomotor disability. I visit the office at least once a
week with petitions from many differently-abled persons in my
neigbourhood. Whenever I get thirsty, I complain about the absence of
water facility there.”
The sufferings of 36-year-old L. Padhma,
mother of a mentally challenged child, are worse. Taking two buses to
reach DMS campus from her residence in Tondairpet, Padhma ensures that
she brings two big bottles of water during her visits. “Two bottles
mean nothing during summer. We cannot buy water every time,” she
said.
Using the bathroom is
another difficulty for disabled persons. Since the toilets are unclean,
some of the disabled visitors who have to crawl find it difficult to use
the dirty toilets.
District differently-abled welfare
officer Jasmine told DC that efforts are on to lay new pipelines and
connect them to the water tank. “Drinking water and other basic
facilities will shortly be made available for the visitors,” she
assured.
