The air intelligence unit (AIU) arrested a passenger attempting to smuggle in gold in a lunch box late on Saturday. The jewellery was valued at Rs55 lakh in the Indian market.
AIU officials had inputs about the movement of the passenger, who landed from Dubai by a Jet Airways flight around 11.50pm. The passenger tried to pass through the green channel but was intercepted by sleuths. On checking his luggage, officials found the gold ornaments in a three-compartment steel lunch box. "He immediately confessed to being a carrier," an AIU official said.
Officials said the physically-challenged passenger claimed he was under tremendous financial stress. "He is from a poor family. He has a one-year-old son to take care of. He said he carried the consignment for money," said an official.
The passenger was paid Rs5,000 for bringing in the consignment. He left for Dubai on Friday, stayed there for a night, picked the lunch box from a person at the airport, and returned. "He will be produced in court on Monday. We are investigating who the consignment belongs to," the official said.
This is the third case of gold smuggling in the last fortnight.
