Over 4,000 people braved the rain on Saturday to
celebrate the abilities of people with special needs at Hong Lim Park.
The event was dubbed “The Purple Parade”, and was held for the first
time in Singapore.
The Purple Parade is a movement which supports the inclusion and celebrates the abilities of persons with special needs in Singapore.

Over 4,000 people braved the rain on Saturday to celebrate the abilities of people with special needs at Hong Lim Park.
The event was dubbed “The Purple Parade”, and was held for the first time in Singapore.
The parade commemorates the International Day of Persons with Disabilities.
It also marks Singapore's signing of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
The event is a ground-up collaboration by 40 organisations.
Acting Culture, Community and Youth Minister Lawrence Wong said: "It's an event that supports inclusion, that celebrates abilities. And the fact that even though it's raining, but still so many people are here and the spirit is so high, shows the kind of ground-up support that Singaporeans have for inclusion."
Minister of State for Education,
Communications and Information Sim Ann said: "We have been working
together with our special schools on raising the quality of curriculum,
and also strengthening the professional development of teachers. And we
will continue to move in this direction."
MP for Moulmein-Kallang GRC Denise Phua said: "The colour purple is selected because it represents royalty and is for special people. And this is a special needs movement so we thought that is meaningful.”
