A Haryana MLA's nephew has
been arrested for allegedly raping a physically challenged dalit woman,
more than five months after he was charged with the crime.
Rajender Obra (32), the nephew of Dharampal Obra, an Indian National Lok Dal MLA from Loharu constituency in Bhiwani district, was arrested on Monday. A local court then remanded him in judicial custody.
The police had registered a case against Rajender last October. They had also registered a case of criminal intimidation and causing hurt against Dharampal and his wife Sheela Devi for allegedly slapping and threatening the 35-year-old woman and her husband when the latter had complained to them against their nephew. The police are yet to take any action against the MLA or his wife.
Umashankar Sharma, the SHO of Behl police station, said Rajender was arrested after a probe by a special investigation team found the rape charges levelled against him to be true. He said the charges against the MLA and his wife were being investigated and action would be taken on the completion of inquiry.
In his police complaint, the 37-year-old husband of the raped woman had alleged that Rajender entered his house for the first time in October 2011 when his wife was alone and raped her. He also alleged that Rajender clicked photographs of the act using his mobile phone.
"Thereafter he kept on sexually exploiting my wife for months," the husband had complained. "Unable to bear the trauma, my wife revealed the entire story to me in February 2012. But when I tried to file a police complaint, the accused sent goons to our house, who threatened and verbally abused us, and asked us not to approach the police. When the MLA came to know about it, he called us to his house. When we complained against his nephew, the MLA asked us to forget about filing a complaint. When we pleaded, he and his wife abused and threatened us and also slapped both of us."
