A senate member of Veer Narmad South Gujarat University (VNSGU) has
alleged that the university is not following the reservation rules for
physically challenged students in PhD admissions. Ganpat Dhameliya, is a
senator from faculty of computer science and information technology,
and owes allegiance to Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the
student wing of BJP.
He has written to Gujarat's education
minister in this regard. However, VNSGU authorities claimed that
Dhameliya, who is physically challenged, did not get admission in PhD
this year due to poor presentation.
Dhameliya has alleged in his letter that admission under physically
challenged reserved seat category began in 2011 in the university. So
far the university has admitted only four students under this category,
he said, referring to the RTI reply that he received from VNSGU. "The
admissions have only been given in arts faculty. The rule says 3 per
cent of the total seats should be reserved for the physically
challenged. However, VNSGU has failed to follow the rules," Dhameliya
alleged.
He claimed of the "Total 212 seats that were offered for
admission in PhD, the university should have reserved seven seats for
physically challenged. However, the university gave admissions to only
two students out of the 14 applicants."
"There is no violation of
rules in the university. We have given admissions to all the eligible
candidates. Dhameliya could not clear the presentation for PhD
admission. We have followed the University Grants Commission rules.
Admission cannot be given to a candidate who fails to fulfill the
eligibility criteria," said Dakshesh Thakar, vice-chancellor, VNSGU.
"Even if I had failed in presentation, but my right on the reserved
seat is not forfeited. I should be given admission if there is no other
eligible candidate for the seat reserved for physically challenged,"
Dhameliya said.
