Upcoming musicians hone skills at unique initiative of blind duo : TRICHY

An initiative of two visually challenged musicians has been helping budding music lovers in the district and neighbouring districts to achieving their dreams by giving them the right platform.

The music association 'Sree Karpaga Isai Sangam', which was founded by Lakshmi Narayanan R (35) and V Venkatraman (50) has been encouraging musicians for over six years now by conducting regular competitions for students in various age groups.

At a recent music competition organised by the association, the first prize of the competition was won by a seven-year-old girl, RS Gopika. The association felicitated 66 upcoming musicians on Sunday by conferring them the Semmangudi Radhakrishna Srinivasa Iyer title.

When the association was formed in 2007, over 60 students from various schools in Trichy participated in competitions organised by it. This year over 220 participated, said Narayanan and Venkatraman.

We started the association with an intention to provide budding musicians with a platform to enable them to showcase their talents. Last year alone, nine musicians made entry into the professional field, they added.

The association conducts music competitions for students aged between 6 and18 for violin and other classical instruments like mridangam, flute and veena. Students from Pudukkottai, Madurai, Gopichettipalayam and other southern regions attended this year's events, said A Venkataganesh, the secretary of the association.

The month-long competition is held during the middle of every year where the participants are judged by music teachers invited from other districts. The children are being assessed under various criteria such as diction, rendition, tala and improvising skills.

V Padmavaathi , a Carnatic vocalist, said she used the association platform three years ago. The experience gave me courage to overcome stage-fright during performances at the professional level, Padmavaathi said.
