With the objective of protecting rights of the differently abled persons and tackle crime against the community, an organisation christened Disability Right Initiative Manipur has been formally launched.
Speaking to newspersons at Manipur Press Club today, one Ph Kripa Meitei, himself a physically challenged person, stated that the Right Initiative was formed to specifically tackle various forms of atrocities being committed against people with disabilities.
While announcing that the new body was formed with the consent of both people with disabilities and family members of differently abled persons, Kripa said lack of punitive action against perpetrators of crime against phy- sically or mentally challenged people, particularly female, led to the formation of Disability Right Initiative Manipur.
Expressing strong resentment that charge-sheet is yet to be filed in the Tangkham rape case even though the accused person is already in judicial custody, he conveyed apprehension on whether similar incidents that occurred recently at Kongba and Khoyathong would also be kept under wrap.
When the rape case of a woman chilly hawker from Tamenglong district at a Bishnupur district area has concluded with the conviction of the accused persons there should be similar expeditious actions against perpetrators of crime against mentally or physically challenged victims, Kripa maintained.
Further stating that befitting punishment against accused person(s) might be able to curb inhumane acts against people with disabilities, he also declared that the newly formed organisation would apprise the president of India, Prime Minister, Governor and Chief Minister of Manipur about numerous cases of crime against the community by submitting memorandums to these national and State leaders.
Moreover, different movements and campaigns would be launched to highlight plight of the differently abled persons as well as protect their rights, Kripa asserted.
