Bangalore: Job fair gives a leg up to many a youth

Job aspirants attend walk-in interviews by various companies at Govt PU College at the job fair organised by NA Haris Foundation and Nagamitra Koota on Saturday.

A state-level job fair organised on Saturday turned out to be a dream come true for physically-challenged B Prakash, who landed a job and is assured about leading life with dignity.



Till now, Prakash, 36, used to maintain a petty shop near Murugeshpalya with the support and cooperation of Krishnaiah Naidu of the police department. “I am very happy to get the offer letter from Maruthi Infotech company. I used to earn about Rs150 per day by selling coffee, tea and cigarettes. Now, I can lead a dignified life with the salary of Rs8,000 per month,” said Prakash, joy and satisfaction written large on his face.



He said it was Naidu who brought him to the job fair and helped him contact the organisers. He recalls that he came in contact with Naidu when he was working at a temple at Kemp Fort on HAL Road. He says his physical condition was making it difficult for him to do that job. That was when Naidu helped him start a petty shop, but this too proved to be a tall order.



Many beneficiaries



Hundreds of youth got offer letters at the job fair, organised by NA Haris Foundation and Naga Mithra Koota. Congress MLA NA Haris said the job fair was the first-of-its-kind to be organised in Shanthinagar assembly constituency.



“The objective of organising the job fair is to bridge the gap between unemployed youth and the companies that can offer jobs for them. We have received a good response from youth and companies,” he said.



Students and unemployed youth from areas such as Sarjapura, Koodlu Gate, Vijayanagar, Rajajinagar, Shanthinagar, Domlur attended the job fair.



“I was told that they will send me the offer letter later. I opted for data entry operator post,” said Narayan Chandra Janu.



Expressing confidence of getting a suitable job at the job fair, Veena S, an MBA graduate, said she wanted to work as a human resource officer at a software company. “I have come from Sarjapura with high hopes. I am confident of getting selected for HR post,” she said.



Expressing similar ambition, Praveena DR, a BBM graduate, was happy to attend the job fair. “I am from Domlur. I have come with my parents. I am looking for an opportunity to work as a HR person at a reputed company,” he said.



According to the organisers, the job fair was inaugurated by minister for transport Ramalinga Reddy. Sixty-eight companies—including Wipro, Mphasis, ICICI, Eureka Forbes, Muthoot, , Bharti AXA, and UB City—participated in the job fair. About 3,400 unemployed youth and students attended the job fair. Six hundred and eighty students got offer letters on the spot and 850 students have been shortlisted.
