Himanshi Bhardwaj, a student and research scholar of media and disability communications at Mumbai-based Ali Yavar Jung National Institute for Hearing Handicapped under the union ministry of social justice and empowerment, presented a research paper titled “Positive portrayal of persons with disabilities” at a conference in the United States of America, on Monday.
The Annual International Crime, Media and Popular Culture Studies Conference was organised by the department of criminology and criminal justice, Indiana State University, at Terre Hautte, Indiana, USA.
“Portrayal of persons with disabilities in the print media has been extensively studied in the past. However, the use of content analysis of a media, as a technique to demonstrate, the significance provided to an issue in a society is rare. Hence, a short-term study on disability issues as portrayed in a daily was undertaken to find out the significance of the same in a metropolitan society of Mumbai. The study included the analysis of disability related news that was depicted in 'The New Indian Express Daily' of the Mumbai edition. News stories were analysed to find out the type of portrayal of persons with disabilities in the daily,” said Himanshi of Solan.
The main aim of organising this conference was to encourage an international cross-disciplinary exchange between both academic scholars and practitioners who are engaged in research, teaching and practices associated with crime, deviance, disability, history, social justice, policy and law and their relationship with the media and popular culture. In this conferencem, around 150 research scholars participated from all over the globe.
