Pune rural police have arrested the principal of a residential school
in Narayangaon where a 45-year-old peon allegedly raped two physically
challenged minor girls repeatedly. The principal was arrested for not
taking action in spite of having knowledge of the crime and not
reporting it to police.
On Wednesday, Pune rural police police had arrested peon Mahadeo Asraji Borade (45) for raping two minor girls aged 13 and 16 several times in about a year at the school for physically challenged students in Narayangaon.
On Thursday, police arrested Bhagwan Gite, the principal and booked him under relevant Sections of the Protection of Children Against Sexual Offences Act, 2012, for not reporting the crime in spite of having knowledge of it.
Both the victims staying at the hostel on the school premises had complained that Borade had raped them repeatedly and threatened them against reporting it. The girls informed their parents when they had come to take them home for vacations. A case was later registered at Narayangaon police station. Police have not ruled out more victims who may now shed fear and complain.
Deputy Superintendent of Police B R Patil told Newsline, "We now know that the principal had come to know about the case and tried very hard to suppress the matter. He also tried to give the peon voluntary retirement to cover up the matter. All this time he had known about the matter."
Gite was produced in court on Thursday and remanded in police custody. Assistant police inspector Narayan Sarangkar is probing the case.
